The Internet landscape is changing at a tremendous rate. In the mid-2000's, a new context is being embraced by tens of millions of web users: blogs, computer mediated communities, e-philanthropy, online communities, podcasts, RSS feeds, social networking, Web 2.0 and Wikis. Web users are tapping into the internet to be part of something bigger than their own individual experience. They are no longer using the web to simply gather information.  How are organizations within the non-profit sector going to harness this new context?  Non-profit organizations, especially small to medium-sized ones, are typically slow to adopt new technology. The cost to implement and maintain these technologies is expensive, and what if these are just trends that end within a year or two?  This session will explore how are organizations like yours can successfully use these new internet technologies to engage people into action, volunteerism, donation…ultimately supporting your mission.

CaringBridge is a 501(c)3 non-profit based in Eagan, Minnesota that offers free, personalized, and private websites for those wishing to stay in-touch with family during significant life events like an illnesses.  Since January 2007, CaringBridge has provided more than 51,000 websites that have received more than 332 million visits and more than 8 million guestbook messages of hope and encouragement to loved ones.

Carolyn Egeberg plans and manages all aspects of CaringBridge's development activities, sharing the successes and needs with the thousands of generous donors who support the mission. Carolyn joined CaringBridge in the summer of 2002. She initially developed relationships with healthcare organizations, encouraging them to give the gift of CaringBridge to their patients and families, and inviting them to provide valuable funding to CaringBridge. In January 2004, she assumed her current leadership position. She is currently pursuing an M.A. in Philanthropy and Development at Saint Mary's University in Winona, Minnesota.
