Summary:  The Major Gifts Officer – East and North Divisions will serve as a primary advocate of Marshfield Clinic fundraising priorities with an emphasis in central and north central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.  The Major Gifts Officer reports to the Chief Development Officer, with a mentor relationship to the Regional Development Officer.  This position will be based in Wausau and will work closely with administrative and physician leadership in the East and North Divisions.

 

With collaborative annual giving, special event, grant writing, planned giving and regional development support, the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing and growing Marshfield Clinic’s philanthropic presence in Wausau, Minocqua and the surrounding communities where Marshfield Clinic has a significant (grateful patient) presence.

 

The successful candidate will ultimately be responsible for developing, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding a portfolio of 150 -200 major gift prospects and donors for gifts of $10,000 or more that will benefit research, education and patient care needs at Marshfield Clinic.

 

Marshfield Clinic is nearing completion of a $40 million campaign for the Laird Center for Medical Research.  The Clinic is establishing a regionalized fundraising program with a fixed presence in strategic, key locations in Wisconsin.  In FY 2007, more than 5,000 donors contributed nearly $7.6 million in support of Marshfield Clinic’s mission. 

 

 

Job Duties: 

 

v     Provide charitable gift expertise to Marshfield Clinic patients, staff and friends and secure outright and planned gifts for the Clinic.

 

v     Serve as an advocate for all Clinic fundraising priorities and collaborate with colleagues in the Development Department. 

 

v     Understand the mission and needs of Marshfield Clinic and communicate with potential and current donors.

 

v     Implement an active, creative program of prospect and donor identification.  Participate in the Prospect Management process. 

 

v     Manage a portfolio of 150-200 prospects.  Engage and motivate prospects and donors with well-written communications, personal contacts and visits.

 

v     Prepare proposals with accuracy and timeliness.  Utilize Marshfield Clinic staff and volunteers to assist with cultivation and solicitation activities.

 

v     Arrange tours, meetings and introductions of major gift donors with Clinic physicians, scientists and staff. 

 

v     Coordinate efforts with other Development colleagues including those responsible for regional activities, annual giving, special events, planned giving and stewardship. 

 

v     Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with Development colleagues, Clinic physicians, scientists, staff and volunteers.

 

v     Provide verbal and written reports regarding the outcome of visits, activities, including planning next steps. 

 

 

Essential Requirements:

 

v     Knowledge of the principles of fundraising; a track record of professional success.

 

v     Demonstrate high ethical standards of behavior, good judgment, respect for others, confidentiality and attention to detail.

 

v     Strong interpersonal skills.  Good writing, listening skills and public speaking skills.  Confidence and poise are valued attributes.

 

v     Strong communication skills, including ability to make the case for Marshfield Clinic’s research, education and patient care needs.

 

v     Demonstrate computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office programs.

 

v     Evidence of self-motivation, ability to work well independently and within a team.

 

v     Participate in fundraising programs, special events and other Clinic activities which may be scheduled in the evenings or occasionally on weekends. 

 

v     Represent the department and Clinic at various events in the community.

 

v     Willingness to travel as required.

v     Other duties as assigned by the Chief Development Officer.

 

 

Qualifications:

 

A)                Education: Bachelor's degree in liberal arts, communications, business or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

 

            B)        License/Certification: Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) preferred.

 

B)                Experience: At least 5 years experience in a non-profit organization (preferably healthcare) or equivalent experience.  A proven track record in sales, fundraising or major gift fundraising.

 

 

 

Personal Attributes Required: Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Must be a good listener.  Strong planning and organizational skills, including ability to manage complex responsibilities.  Must possess personal characteristics associated with successful development professionals:  sound judgement, leadership, impeccable integrity, demonstrated initiative, appropriate professional appearance, positive attitude and personality to work effectively with donors, prospects, Development colleagues, Clinic physicians, scientists and other staff.

 

Physical, Mental and Visual Skills: Minor physical skills required.  Ability to deal with a wide variety of intellectual and practical problems, and comprehend and articulate new and abstract concepts.  Must demonstrate proficient computer skills (visual).

 

Special Factors: A willingness to make day trips (most not overnight), approximately 12-15 days per month, on behalf of Marshfield Clinic.

 

Working Conditions: Regular business hours are observed Monday through Friday in the department. Must be willing to work longer hours to accommodate donors' schedules and to represent the department at public events.
